Kristi LaRee Poetry Scholarship

Purpose:

Kristi LaRee was born in Omaha, Nebraska and died as a victim of domestic violence when she was 9 years old. Though she struggled through adversity in her short life, she was determined and resilient. She was light. She loved to dance, and laugh, and read. Kristi did not have the opportunity to attend college, but she would want to help others.

Eligible Schools:

Any Omaha Public High School.

Selection Criteria:

  1. High School Senior.
  2. Resilient and Determined Character.
  3. Submit up to 3 Poems on Any Subject.
  4. Submit a short essay (250-500 words) “How poetry has helped me overcome adversity”.
  5. Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher and/or administrator.

Selection Process:

All applications will be reviewed by the friends and family of Kristi LaRee who will select the final recipient. Should you be selected for this award, please send verification of your enrollment at the college or university of your choice and a “Thank You” note directed to the donor to Omaha Public Schools Foundation. The award will be forwarded to the college of choice upon receipt.

Liberty Elementary Scholarship

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to a student seeking post-secondary education who had formerly attended Liberty Elementary School.

Eligible Recipients: A graduating senior from an Omaha Public High School who formerly attended Liberty Elementary.

Selection Criteria:

1. Student must demonstrate a financial need and submit a Scholarship financial statement
2. Student must submit a short essay stating their personal and professional goals, including their reason for continuing into post-secondary education.
3. Student must submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or an administrator.
4. Student will submit a current transcript.
5. Student will state which years he/she attended Liberty Elementary School

Amount: $2500.00

Selection Process: Selection will be made by the Liberty Scholarship Selection Committee. Should you be selected for this award, please send verification of your enrollment at the college or university of your choice and a “Thank You” note directed to the donor to Omaha Public Schools Foundation. Marian Martinez Memorial Scholarship

Purpose:

To provide a scholarship for one Latino Omaha Public Schools graduating senior for a student who demonstrates a strong work ethic, passion for volunteering in their community and helping others, and commitment to post-secondary education.

Amount:

$ 2500.00

Selection Criteria:

  1. Student displays character
  2. Student holds a minimum GPA 2.75
  3. Student submits his/her transcript and resume.
  4. Student submits a short essay (500 words) which describes student’s volunteer service experience and how it embodies the spirit of Marian Martinez and her legacy.
  5. Student submits a letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach or counselor.

Selection Process:

Up to three students may be nominated by each school.  Applications that have not strictly followed the guidelines will not be considered. The recipient will be chosen by sponsors of the scholarship.  Sponsors may also wish to meet with recipient.

Martha Stofko Scholarship (Benson West)

Mrs. Martha Stofko is a former teacher and principal with nearly 30 years of experience in the Omaha Public Schools. She was principal of Benson West Elementary School from 1999-2007.

Purpose:

To provide financial assistance to a former 6th grade graduate of Benson West Elementary School who is seeking post-secondary education.

Eligible Schools:

All OPS High Schools

Selection Criteria:

  1. Student must have attended Benson West Elementary for a minimum of three years and graduated 6th grade from the school.
  2. Student must demonstrate financial need and submit a scholarship financial statement.
  3. Student must submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or school administrator.
  4. Student must submit a recent transcript showing a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
  5. Student must submit an essay stating their personal and professional goals.

Amount:

$500

Mick Messbarger Memorial Scholarship (Central)

Purpose:

The purpose of this memorial is to provide a scholarship for an OPS graduating senior from Central High School who has participated in the Central Legion Baseball Program. This scholarship is in memory of Mick Messbarger who was a dedicated coach for the Memorial Park Baseball Little League and someone who loved baseball stats, trivia and most of all the game of baseball.  (Particularly the Texas Rangers!)

Amount: $750.00

Selection Criteria:

  1. Student must have participated a minimum of three years in the Central Baseball Program.
  2. Demonstrate Character/Citizenship
  3. Minimum GPA 3.0/Self-motivated
  4. Submit Financial Aid Form
  5. Submit student’s transcript
  6. Submit a short essay (500 words) “How I plan to use my education to benefit society.”
  7. Submit a letter of recommendation from the baseball coach, teacher and/or administrator.

Selection Process:

Students will be nominated by the Central High Scholarship Committee.  Preference will be given to players who participated in the Memorial Park Little League Baseball Program. The recipient will be chosen by sponsors of the scholarship.  *Please note that the donors would like to see financial information as well as a letter of recommendation from the coach, counselor or a teacher.

Millie Lemon “Ms. Tucker” Scholarship

Purpose:  

To provide a scholarship for a deserving graduating Bryan High School senior in honor of Mrs. Lemon/Ms. Tucker.

Amount:

$1000.00 payable to an accredited 2 or 4-year post-secondary institution.  

Recipients:

One graduating senior from Bryan High School.

Criteria:

  1. GPA between 2.5 and 3.5.
  2. Must have spent four years at Bryan High School.
  3. Must have taken Spanish for four years.
  4. Must have completed and earned passing grades in 7 semesters of Spanish classes.
  5. Must be enrolled in 2nd semester of senior year Spanish class.
  6. Student must submit a one-page essay addressing, “How will what you have learned taking four (4) years of high school Spanish help you in the future?” Please include your future plans in the essay.

Selection Procedure:

The Lemon Family will select recipient and present award letter on Honors Night.
